The Shrewsbury Club delighted to lift the Mackenzie Shield

The Shrewsbury Club have won the Mackenzie Shield, an annual mixed doubles tennis competition for Shropshire clubs.

Captained by Luke Henley, the triumphant team from The Shrewsbury Club beat Bridgnorth Tennis Club in the final.

The eventual winners had reached the final by knocking out teams from Ludlow Castle, Newport’s Boughey Gardens and Shrewsbury Lawn Tennis Club in the earlier rounds.

Luke was joined in the winning team by Hanna Cadwallader, Amy Dannatt and Adam Wharf as they got the better of a Bridgnorth team featuring Sarah Downes, Matt Hunt, Holly Mowling and Alastair Pay. “Everybody’s really happy,” said captain Luke. “Everybody played well and it was a really good performance. Tom Loxley and Mohamed Morsi both played in previous rounds, so they also played their part.” 

The Mackenzie Shield, which has a long history as a prestigious competition in the Shropshire tennis calendar, was presented to the winning team by Simon Jones, the chair of Tennis Shropshire.

“It was a really good final with lots of excellent tennis played,” he added. A plate competition will be introduced to the Mackenzie Shield for the first time when it is next contested later this year.
