Miss-Hits tennis lessons in Shrewsbury for Girls 5-8

Miss-Hits, one of the exciting programmes we have on offer here at The Shrewsbury Club, aspires to encourage more young girls to give tennis a try. How? By creating a fun, lively environment through the incorporation of dance-style warm-ups, team games and a range of great characters.

Encouraging girls to give tennis a go

The Miss-Hits programme was created with the goal of making tennis more welcoming and exciting for girls. At entry level, statistics show that there are currently four times as many boys on the courts as there are girls. This is what Miss-Hits wants to change. Striving to make the sport much more attractive to the female target audience, the programme gives young girls the chance to develop their hand-eye coordination, learn a variety of strokes and truly enjoy playing tennis.

As they progress through the programme, children learn how the game works as they gain tennis-specific skills, with the help of seven likeable characters – each of whom is associated with a different shot. This ‘fun’ factor is key with Miss-Hits: their unique programme uses music and dance, nail stickers and colouring sheets, puzzles and tricks to ensure girls love taking part.

Numerous health benefits

There are so many benefits for girls who take part in the Miss-Hits programme. Tennis is fantastic for helping young children maintain an active lifestyle – benefitting bone and muscle strength, and developing healthy habits for a lifetime. The sport boosts aerobic and anaerobic fitness, by getting the blood pumping around the body, as well as improving reaction times and flexibility. Active children enjoy a better night’s sleep, enhancing their ability to tackle life’s emotional and physical challenges.

Boosting social skills

Not just brilliant for helping young girls to stay active, Miss-Hits sessions aid children with their social and cognitive development. The programme nurtures social skills as the girls interact in team games with other players, offering a valuable opportunity to meet new people and expand their friendship circle. Miss-Hits develops confidence as the girls progress through the ascending stages, and by the end they will be ready to join another of our great Mini Tennis programmes!

Created by an international tennis star

Miss-Hits was devised and founded by renowned tennis star Judy Murray, Fed Cup coach and mother of international champions Jamie and Andy Murray. Judy is honoured for winning 64 Scottish Titles and is one of the world’s top skill-developers in young tennis players. As a member of the government’s Women in Sport strategy group, Judy is passionate about celebrating more female names in the sport. The first step to achieving this is by encouraging the youngest players to pick up a racquet.

Miss-Hits is on to a winner!

Judy and her team have clearly found a winning combination with Miss-Hits – by researching exactly what makes sports and hobbies enjoyable for girls aged between five and eight, and avoiding those aspects which might deter this audience. The Miss-Hits programme will definitely inspire UK female tennis stars of the future!

Above all, it aspires to keep young girls active and healthy. Of course, that is what we are all about here at The Shrewsbury Club. We are passionate about tennis and, with our outstanding facilities, which are amongst the best in the country, we wish to motivate players of all ages and genders alike.
