From Shrewsbury to New York!
Both players involved in last weekend's US Open women's final in New York played at The Shrewsbury Club as rising stars earlier in their careers. A number of players now world stars have graced the courts at The Shrewsbury Club in the past in Aegon GB Pro-Series tournaments. It means that there is even more incentive to attend the next Aegon event at The Shrewsbury Club which will be held between November 5-12 and will again expect to pull in up and coming players from across the world as well as lots of spectators keen to watch the stars of the future close up.
Last weekend German ace Angelique Kerber, the new world number one, beat Karolina Pliskova, from the Czech Republic, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4 in an exciting final at Flushing Meadows although neither managed to progress further than the quarter-finals when they visited The Shrewsbury Club to play in Aegon tournaments!
Kerber, 28, was knocked out in the last eight by British player Katie O’Brien, the eventual runner-up, in 2009 while Pliskova, 24, who beat Serena Williams in the semi-finals of the US Open, played Shrewsbury more recently, in 2012, when she lost in the second round to Russian player Ekaterina Bychkova.
French player Oceane Dodin, currently ranked 132 in the world, has won the popular Shrewsbury event in each of the last two years.
